The White Woods Public School boys and girls basketball teams both claimed the elementary schools championship banners on Wednesday, March 27. The boys won 45-25 over St. Joseph, with Jacob McLeod leading the way with 18 points for the Wolverines, winning the game MVP. In the girls’ game, the Wolverines won 31-13 over the North Bay U-14 Spartans, with game MVP Beatrice Moulton scoring 22 points, including going perfect 8-8 from the free throw line.

“Torrin (Baptiste) and Jacob (McLeod) were lights out,” beamed coach Kiley Moulton, praising the two leaders on the boys’ team. “Hard work pays off, both teams played really well,” he continued, “I’m super proud.”

Final game MVP for the St. Joseph boys was Jacob Hayes and for the North Bay Spartan girls, Imam N’Gota.

White Woods also finished first in regular season play, with the boys going 5-1, suffering their only loss to St. Joseph, and the girls going undefeated 6-0.

Mouton, who coaches both teams and also convenes the league, plans to pass the coaching torch on next season, and focus on the league and skills development, both at the school and through his West Nipissing Basketball Camp program.

“Basketball continues to be a growing sport in the community. Every team showcased improving skill and great team play,” Moulton concluded. He thanked all the volunteer parent and teacher coaches for their time and energy, Northern Secondary School for the use of the gym for the finals, and the North Bay officials, who refereed the games this season. “West Nipissing has many talented players. We hope in the future, we again see more schools field teams in the WNBL.”
