Heavy police presence at the site of local businesses along Hwy 17 have led to much conjecture and worry in the community, but police are still staying mum on the operation that has been going on at 12193 Hwy 17 since June 18. The site’s main building features a sign for the business T&T Insulation, but the property reportedly houses other businesses as well, and it is unclear which, if any, business is involved. While there are fewer police on site this week, as of Tuesday the property was still blocked off by an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) vehicle parked across the entrance, with other law enforcement vehicles further inside the property.
The Tribune reached out to the OPP for information, and was redirected to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), as the federal force is in charge of the investigation, with the OPP only assisting. Questions addressed to the RCMP have been left mostly unanswered at the moment, though the force’s Media Relations Unit did assure that “there is no indication of any immediate risk to the surrounding community.”
“This remains an active investigation, and officers are expected to continue working at the scene for the next several days,” indicates the RCMP by email, adding that York Regional Police, Niagara Regional Police and the Ontario Fire Marshal are also assisting in addition to the OPP. “Due to the complexity of the investigation and ongoing operational activity, further details are not available at this time.”
The Tribune did ask if any arrests have been made, what type of criminal activity is suspected or alleged, and if any other sites were searched as part of the investigation, along with several other questions. At press time, no answers had been provided, though the RCMP did commit to revealing more details in time. “A media release with full details is forthcoming and we would be happy to provide that release to you directly when it becomes available,” reads its statement. No timeline was specified and no other communication was provided at press time.
