False bomb threat at local school

Two young people were located and identified following a reported bomb threat at an unnamed elementary school in West Nipissing. On Monday, May 11, at approximately 3:00 p.m., members of the Nipissing West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received information regarding a threat made from an anonymous source. At the time of the incident, the majority of students had already left for the day. As a precaution, the school was evacuated and temporarily closed while police conducted the investigation. Front-line officers, along with the OPP North East Region Emergency Response Team conducted a complete search of the school, which resulted in no explosive devices or threats being located.

The youths, who cannot be identified under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), were dealt with through community support programs. To protect the identities of the youths involved, the OPP did not identify the school.

E-bike rider stopped for improper lighting, charged with drug offences

The OPP arrested one person with drug related offences after stopping an e-bike for improper lighting. On Tuesday April 28, at approximately 1:40 a.m., members from the Nipissing West Detachment of the OPP conducted a traffic stop upon seeing an e-bike operating without any lights on at night, on Nipissing Street in Sturgeon Falls.

As a result of the investigation, Joseph Nixon, age 49 from West Nipissing, was arrested and charged with possession of a Schedule I substance – methamphetamine; trafficking in property obtained by crime; failing to wear a proper helmet on power-assisted bicycle; and improper lighting on a motor assisted bicycle. The accused was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on May 14, in North Bay.
