Of course, the battle of the chip stands is nothing new in West Nipissing, where people have been debating for decades on who makes the best poutine. To locals, these spots are more than roadside shacks. They are community anchors that have elicited good-natured rivalry, predominantly among the two oldest – and front-facing – establishments: Larry’s and the Riv on Main Street.
Recently, the local culinary landmarks caught the attention of internet personality Scott McMillan, better known to his followers as Scott From Scotland. The creator took a moment to chat with the Tribune about his experience comparing the town’s well-known poutine spots. Scott is from Glasgow and has made his home in Sudbury via his Canadian wife. When word reached him about a legendary, decades-old chip stand rivalry in Sturgeon Falls, he packed up his camera and headed down Highway 17 to weigh in on the local debate.
His video series quickly made the rounds in online community groups, racking up tens of thousands of views across TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram. Scott didn’t just drop in for a quick bite; he broke down the contenders with the analytical eye of a food critic and the enthusiasm of someone who truly gets Northern Ontario culture.
