With temperatures soaring to a blistering 30°C on July 1st, residents turned out in full force for the Municipality of West Nipissing’s annual Canada Day festivities. Following local tradition, the daytime events in Sturgeon Falls were split to offer the perfect mix of indoor and outdoor activities at the recreation complex. This year featured a distinct, high-energy twist: a heavy emphasis on soccer, celebrating Canada’s role as co-host of the FIFA World Cup.
The daytime fun kicked off at 10:00 am in the complex parking lot, where attendees were greeted by a local Alouette school bus surrounded by a team of friendly drivers handing out washable paint. Running until 2:00 pm, the interactive setup invited participants to paint directly onto the vehicle. By noon, the bus was completely transformed into a vibrant, temporary community art installation covered in smiley faces and colorful artwork. “It was a chance for the kids to just be kids, and for us to connect with the community in a completely joyful way,” an Alouette volunteer shared.
Nearby, a giant, air-conditioned Game On Express trailer offered another fun option to beat the heat, allowing visitors to step out of the sun and test their skills on a virtual soccer pitch. Out on the grass of Goulard Park, the World Cup spirit continued with outdoor soccer skills challenges, an obstacle course, and mini-games. These activities were facilitated by player-coaches from the École secondaire catholique Franco-Cité Patriotes soccer teams, who guided the young participants through the pre-registered events. Under the outdoor tent, a dedicated water station kept families hydrated, while a crafts station saw youngsters design and colour their own paper soccer jerseys.
