Diane Baronette, chair of the United 50 Club in Cache Bay, is hard at work on another community development project after successfully lobbying and fundraising for cenotaph and park improvements in her community. Her latest endeavour is to add a gazebo to the kids’ splash pad and play area, providing families with shade just in time for next summer.

Baronette presented the project to West Nipissing Council in September, asking them to approve the construction and confirming that her committee had already raised the $39,000 estimated cost of the gazebo, with $15,000 from fundraising and $25,000 coming from the Caisse Alliance – a donation presented to her during the Caisse’s annual members’ meeting in Sturgeon Falls on September 23.

Council voted on moving forward with the project at an October 6 council meeting, despite concerns raised by the town’s Community Services Director Stephan Poulin. “What tends to happen repeatedly, the community group doesn’t understand the full extent of what it is to construct a structure on municipal property, for public use. So, I just want to be clear that we’ll work with the community groups, and lay out the groundwork from the onset, so that they understand our requirements as far as building codes, as far as architectural drawings, as far as getting engineers involved. Because we always end up, from a community groups standpoint, running out of money and then we have to pick up the tab to finish these projects,” cautioned Poulin.
