West Nipissing Police briefs

Two arson investigations in West Nipissing

On June 28, 2024, shortly after 7:00 a.m., members from the Nipissing West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Nipissing Fire Service responded to a structure fire on Front Street in Sturgeon Falls, affecting businesses in the former Truchon Fuel building at 162 Front Street. The street remained closed for much of the morning as investigators and fire crews attended the scene.

Prior to the fire, two unknown persons, dressed in red hoodies and red jogging pants, were observed attending the property in a rented 2023 white Hyundai with a fuel container. Police suspect the fire may have been started intentionally, and are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the individuals involved.

While the businesses in the building closed for the day, they were reopened in the evening and next day, with only minor damage sustained in the pizza shop known as Steve’s Premiere Pizza on the west extremity of the building.

This Sturgeon Falls fire came just two weeks after another suspicious fire, which was reported in River Valley.

Two people were observed traveling on an All-Terrain-Vehicle (ATV), then approached the vehicle and started the fire. There were no injuries reported.
