The Municipality of West Nipissing honoured the volunteers who contribute to the town’s quality of life in a special ceremony held June 25 at the Sturgeon River House Museum. The celebration was the first of its kind and is expected to become an annual tradition in what was touted as a way to recognize “the individuals and organizations whose dedication, generosity, and community spirit help make West Nipissing a stronger, more connected place to live.”
The event followed a nomination period in which members of the public were invited to suggest deserving candidates. The town indicates that “many submissions were received from across the municipality. A selection committee consisting of three members of Council and two municipal staff members reviewed the nominations based on criteria including community impact, leadership and mentorship, and lasting contribution.”
Awards were presented in four categories: Dream Team (community groups), Community Champion (adult volunteers), Heart of Gold (75+ years), and Rising Star (17 years and under). In the Dream Team category, the Verner Beautification Committee was honoured for its work enhancing that town’s appearance and appeal, while No More Tears West Nipissing was recognized for its work in helping the community’s homeless population.
